Description
The CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR) is dedicated to supporting the advancement of health services and policy research in Canada. To this end, we are pleased to launch the 2015-16 competition of the IHSPR Article of the Year Award.Objectives
This award is intended to recognize published research in a peer-reviewed journal that has significantly contributed to the advancement of the field of health services and policy research in Canada. IHSPR will consider articles related to:- Research that demonstrates a clear impact or potential impact on
policy, practice, or health outcomes (e.g., decision maker uptake,
change management for improved practice);
OR - Research that breaks ground in the way health services or policy research is conducted (e.g., innovations in methodology, novel theory or application of theory, new approaches to existing problems).
Award
One (1) award will be distributed. The award will be granted to the lead author(s) on the top article for research as described in the above stated objectives.The award recipient will receive the following:
- An award of $10,000;
- The opportunity to receive the award and/or deliver an invited talk at a CIHR-IHSPR or partner event (and up to a maximum of $2,000 in conference registration and travel support to attend);
- Promotion of the author and award winning article through various CIHR channels, including the CIHR website and CIHR-IHSPR newsletter;
- A certificate of excellence from CIHR-IHSPR.
Eligibility Criteria
- The award will be granted to the lead author(s) of the top rated article;
- In the case where the lead authorship is shared, the award will be shared equally between the authors;
- The lead author of the article must have conducted the research for the article in a Canadian institution. Canadians and non-Canadians are eligible;
- The article must be original research or research synthesis and must have been published in a peer-reviewed journal between January 1, 2015 and February 26, 2016 (both hard copy and electronic/web-based publishing are acceptable within the stated timeframe);
- Applicants can apply to the Rising Star Award or the Article of the Year Award, but not both;
- Applicants may only submit one article per competition year.
- Applicants cannot have previously received an Article of the Year Award.
Nomination Guidelines
- Nominations are invited from the health services and policy research and decision-maker communities;
- Self-nominations are accepted.
Review Process and Evaluation
Applications will undergo an initial assessment by IHSPR staff to ensure that they are eligible, complete, and relevant to IHSPR's mandate and/or priority research areas. Only eligible, complete, and relevant applications will proceed to the application review stage.A review committee comprised of members of IHSPR's Advisory Board will review the applications. Final decisions rest with the Institute's Scientific Director.
Nominations will be evaluated based on:
- The relevance and strength of the journal for the target audience of the article's research findings or policy implications.
- The extent to which the article contributes to the advancement of health services and policy research in Canada by:
- Showing a clear impact or potential impact on policy, practice, or health outcomes;
or - Breaking ground in the way health services or policy research is conducted.
- Showing a clear impact or potential impact on policy, practice, or health outcomes;
- The overall strength and clarity of the article.
How to Apply
All nominations must include the following:- A completed online nomination form [ HTML | PDF fillable (107 KB) | PDF non-fillable (166 KB) ], which requires the following information:
- A full citation of the published article (authors, title, name of journal, year, volume, issue, page numbers)
- Brief explanation (300 word maximum) of how the article has contributed to the advancement of the field of health services and policy research in Canada
- An electronic or hard copy of the published article
- In cases where the lead author is not the first author of the article, nominations should include a signed letter from the first author acknowledging the role of the nominated author and their eligibility for the award.
