Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre Research Residency

Key duties for the OICC Oncology Research Residency will include:
• Providing partially-supervised clinical care for cancer patients
• Providing parenteral therapy support
• Conducting synthesis research and developing clinical patient support materials
• Involvement in community outreach and education including giving presentations
• Engaging in the conduct and development of clinical trial and observational research
• Participating in oncology-focused CE development to be provided internally at the OICC and available externally for the ND profession
• Being involved in other team building, research, and clinical duties as assigned by the Executive Director of OICC
• Writing consultation notes for other physicians involved in a patients care.
QUALIFICATIONS
• The OICC Resident must be a graduate of a CNME approved college, have written the NPLEX clinical sciences examinations by August 2016, and be eligible for licensure in Ontario by October 2016.
• The OICC Resident should possess a specific interest in cancer, and be prepared to write exams for prescribing rights and for parenteral therapy within 6 months of commencing the residency. The resident should demonstrate a strong interest and aptitude for naturopathic medical research. The candidate should be confident, collaborative and personable.
• The OICC resident will work within a collaborative team model that honours different types of practice and seeks to integrate complementary medicine with other types of care including conventional medicine.
SCOPE OF PRACTICE
Residents will be practicing under the policies, standards and guidelines defined by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO) in the province of Ontario. The CONO regulates its naturopathic doctors in the following therapies:
• Acupuncture and Asian medicine
• Botanical medicine
• Clinical nutrition
• Homeopathy
• Hydrotherapy
• Naturopathic manipulation and physical medicine
• Prevention and lifestyle counseling
To obtain licensure for the above scope of practice, Ontario requires the successful completion of the NPLEX homeopathy and acupuncture add-on examinations, as well as the Ontario Clinical Exams (practical examinations in acupuncture, physical examination and instrumentation, and manipulation). These practical examinations are offered in Ontario concurrent with the NPLEX examinations in August and January. In addition to the NPLEX exams, to prescribe certain natural health products and prescription medicines, licensed NDs are required to write the Therapeutic Prescribing Exam. In order to support the IVIT shifts, residents are expected to write the IVIT exam within 6 months of the beginning of the residency.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
• Base salary of $36,799 for the first year.
• Allowance for 14 hours of clinical practice time per week providing 25% commission for patient visits

Please note that if the resident is unsuccessful in being eligible for registration with the CONO in October 2016, then the candidate may not be able to start the Residency Program, and the position may be offered to another registered candidate.
