wifi but no electricity

Both Tim Hortons and McDonalds advertize their 24 hour service with free wifi. Nanaimo's 24 hour place close to the ferry terminal does not have any plugs. Campbell River McDonalds and Tim Horton's have one plug each.

Eagles and ravens

There are lots of eagles here. It is quiet enough to hear a raven beat its wings. Ravens are considered to be bad guys when young chickens are about.

Text for pictures of Malcolm Island

You don't have to drag your suitcase down those stairs in Port McNeil, there is plenty of time to take the long way around to the ferry. At the plant sale two women stood for 15 mins holding onto a rosemary and a lavender plant so that no one else could buy it before the sale started.

New Scientist pigeons are smart

Bird brainiacs: The genius of pigeons

They can count, solve Aristotle's logic puzzles and appreciate Impressionist art. Don't underestimate the flying rat
FROM the piazzas of Venice to the sidewalks of New York City, the same refrain appears on signs the world over: "Do Not Feed the Pigeons!" "We just see them as a nuisance, flocking around McDonald's and pecking all the French fries," says Onur Güntürkün, who has studied pigeons for more than three decades.
It wasn't always this way. Not so long ago, we stuffed Columba livia specimens for display in military museums, honouring them for their brave flights transporting messages across enemy territory. Charles Darwin took up pigeon breeding to help him hone his theory of natural selection, and was dazzled by their charms. Before a visit from his friend the geologist Charles Lyell, Darwin wrote: "I will show you my pigeons! Which is the greatest treat, in my opinion, which

Departure Bay

OK Departure Bay's internet service at their ferry terminal is not good enough for this laptop. Duke Point is the wrong ferry terminal for people without cars. Buses do not go there. $40 by taxi to Departure Bay or downtown.

Malcolm Island

On Malcolm Island now. My computer was taken by accident off the bus in Campbell River and I only got it back today. The bus ride from Naniamo is 6.5 hours. Only once a day from Greyhound. At Port McNeil you have to take a ferry that also goes to Alert Bay. I also have pictures and I'll put them up another time. Another 2 friendly dogs and 2 cats that haven't made friends yet. One is close by though. Chickens, salad, raspberries and others I will write about later.

The New Abolitionism | The Nation

The New Abolitionism | The Nation

So in order to preserve a roughly habitable planet, we somehow need
to convince or coerce the world’s most profitable corporations and the
nations that partner with them to walk away from $20 trillion of wealth.
Since all of these numbers are fairly complex estimates, let’s just
say, for the sake of argument, that we’ve overestimated the total amount
of carbon and attendant cost by a factor of 2. Let’s say that it’s just
$10 trillion.

The last time in American history that some powerful set of interests
relinquished its claim on $10 trillion of wealth was in 1865—and then
only after four years and more than 600,000 lives lost in the bloodiest,
most horrific war we’ve ever fought.

It is almost always foolish to compare a modern political issue to
slavery, because there’s nothing in American history that is slavery’s
proper analogue. So before anyone misunderstands my point, let me be
clear and state the obvious: there is absolutely no conceivable moral
comparison between the enslavement of Africans and African-Americans and
the burning of carbon to power our devices. Humans are humans;
molecules are molecules. The comparison I’m making is a comparison
between the political economy of slavery and the political economy of
fossil fuel.

Olera farms still

I guess I have never worked in a greenhouse for a long period of time. They are hot. With a heated soil and additional height, it is easy imagine being able to grow tropical fruit trees. I've never seen vegetables being grown in troughs before, my experience has always been with them grown on the top of a ridge, I am guessing it has something to do with the tractor tool that was used to prepare the soil and plant.
Huffpo was advertizing a photography book on black dogs which they claimed were not popular. It's hard to believe that when looking at the glossy black lab on the farm.

Olera Farms this week

I'm working on Olera Farms this week. I wrote about the farm in this book below.

Movement Towards an Alternative Food Economy? Social Economy, Co-Operatives an... http://www.amazon.com/dp/0978346882/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_-3Jytb0NQZKKPFAE via @amazon

It is a different farm now. Fred Reid lost his organic chicken battle with the marketing board and moved north. His brother Brad who I also interviewed died last year. The farm has vegetables and fruit now. Two friendly dogs. As a child I often wondered if all dogs understood the same "game language" - the "play bow" and the resulting game. Apparently they do.
