Ethnoveterinary remedies used in British Columbia, Canada for megacolon, urinary, gastrointestinal, endocrinopathies and hepatic diseases and other problems in dogs and cats
Abstract
In ethnoveterinary research conducted in British Columbia in 2003, semi-structured interviews were carried out with 60 participants obtained from a purposive sample. Medicinal plants were used to treat a range of conditions in companion animals and livestock. This paper presents the plants reported to be used for gastrointestinal, urinary and other problems in dogs and cats. The plants used included ginger (Zingiber officinale), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), oregano (Origanum majorana), turmeric (Curcuma longa), gentian (Gentiana lutea), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and peppermint (Mentha piperita). Cushings/hyperadrenocorticism is treated with ginkgo leaf (Ginkgo biloba). Parsley piert (Alchemilla arvensis), Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) and nettles (Urtica dioica) are used as kidney tonics.
Benign hyperplasia in dogs is treated with saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) fruit.
