400/500 course on whaling literature, framed by human-animal studies theory and eco-criticism

Dear STS students, I’m co-teaching a 400/500 course on whaling literature, framed by human-animal studies theory and eco-criticism, with Nick Bradley from UVic at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, July 3 – July 20, 2018. Course info here: http://www.bamfieldmsc.com/education/prospective-students/courses/detail/in-pursuit-of-the-whale UBC Vancouver students have to apply for a cross-campus transfer as the course is only in the UBC Okanagan calendar. Bamfield is a tiny village on the west coast that has a history of Indigenous and settler whaling, as well as more recent cetacean science at the BMSC, so it’s a fantastic site for this intensive three-week course. Last time we taught it, students came from the USA and the UK as well as the partner institutions across Western Canada, and we were escorted by a Huu-Ay-Aht elder to the whaling chieftain’s longhouse in an abandoned village nearby. Students who went swimming in Pachena Bay one morning were joined by a gray whale and her calf. Please email me if you need any other information, or inducement.
