Assistant Professor of Social Science and Applied Ethics of Animal-Based Food Systems

University of California, Davis - Departments of Human Ecology and Animal Science

The University of California at Davis is pleased to announce the recruitment for a tenure-track, academic year (9-month) faculty position in social and ethical dimensions of animal-based food systems. The successful candidate will have appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Departments of Human Ecology and Animal Science in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Criteria for appointment include: a Ph.D. or equivalent in sociology, geography, anthropology, applied philosophy, environmental studies, science and technology studies, urban and regional planning, political science, public policy, economics, or closely related disciplines, a record of excellence in scholarly research, and demonstrable potential to establish a competitively-funded research program. The Departments of Human Ecology and Animal Science are seeking applicants that focus on ethical dimensions of animal-based food systems. Specific areas of specialization can include the rise, dynamics, and impacts of emerging animal-based food systems (including certified, labeled, direct, and ethical supply chains); sociocultural dimensions of consumption and supply chains (including public perceptions of and segmented demand for animal agriculture and its products; animal welfare and consumption preferences and trends; changing demand for meat, dairy, and other animal products; the rise of vegetarianism and veganism); and epistemological dimensions of animal product consumption (including consumer’s access to information and ability to choose specific types of animal products, and struggles, discrepancies, and agreements involving technology, innovation, and knowledge production/translation). The appointee will be responsible for teaching two undergraduate courses and one graduate seminar per year, and be actively involved in undergraduate advising, curricular development and department and university service. The appointee is also expected to guide and mentor graduate students and participate in research and outreach/engagement programs consistent with the mission of the UC Agricultural Experiment Station. An interest in or willingness to undertake research in California would be desirable as is experience with research which addresses the concerns of traditionally underrepresented groups.
Applicants should submit materials via the following website: https://recruit.ucdavis.edu. Additional inquiries can be directed to Ryan Galt, recruitment co-chair (regalt@ucdavis.edu). The position will remain open until filled but to ensure consideration, applications should be received by December 16, 2016.
