call for Papers: Conference on Feminist Consumption: DEADLINE EXTENDED TO DECEMBER 5

Critical theorist, Nancy Fraser, made headlines with her piece in The Guardian, “How Feminism Became Capitalism’s Handmaiden,” in which she argued that while the women’s movement once critiqued capitalist exploitation, it’s ideas bolstered neoliberalism. North American feminists, living within a consumer society, daily face the tensions between capitalism and the ideologies of a multitude of feminisms. How does consumption impact our identities as feminists? Does feminist consumption exist? If so, what does it ultimately mean to consume as a feminist?

Possible topics may include, but are not limited to: shopping, eating, advertising, beauty, and economics in the North American context.  This conference will be open to papers from all disciplines.

The conference will take place at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec on Friday, March 24 , 2017. Please submit a 150-250 word abstract and 1 page CV (or bio) by December 5, 2016 to alexandraketchum@gmail.com with the email subject line "Last name/ First name, Feminist Consumption Conference".
