New Styles of Thought and Practices in Early 20th Century Biology: Epistemologies and Politics,
Ruhr-University Bochum, 5th – 6th Dec. 2016
This workshop will bring together scholars from history and philosophy of the life sciences who have worked on the early 20th century, in particular on the 1920s and 1930s, from different perspectives and with respect to different countries. A particular focus of the workshop will be laid on research questions, phenomena, theories, and methods in fields such as cell biology, embryology, developmental biology, as well as different approaches in theoretical biology and biophilosophy at that time. This includes well-known intellectual movements such as critique on reductionism, holism, vitalism, organicism, dialectical materialism, which we want to address anew from both philosophical as well as historical perspectives. In addition, the styles of biological thought in different scientific communities should be addressed, also with respect to transnational developments. Which new research fields or interdisciplinary and international collaborations were established? Finally, from a philosophical perspective, we want to discuss whether we can make use of concepts and theories of the interwar period to address current problems in biological thought, for example, when it comes to linking cells or organisms with their environments and development with evolution.
