Dear Penney,
The Rideau Institute is hosting a provocative and forward looking
presentation by Peggy Mason entitled: *What a Feminist Foreign Policy
Really Looks Like* on Wednesday, 18 October 7 to 9:30 pm at the First
Baptist Church, 140 Laurier Avenue West, Ottawa
.
Click here for the link to Eventbrite
for tickets, which are
also available at the door from 6:30 pm.
Peggy Mason will argue that the core of a truly feminist foreign policy,
unlike Canada’s, must be the UN Charter vision of sustainable peace and
common security, key principles of which are the right to security of all
states and their peoples, and the primacy of conflict prevention and the
peaceful resolution of disputes. Rejection of war as a means to resolve
political conflict is at the very core of a truly feminist foreign policy.
This means, for example, not only championing the participation of women in
peace processes but championing the peace process itself, as the essential
foundation for helping the parties to the conflict negotiate a
comprehensive framework for sustainable peace.
Peggy Mason was Legal Advisor to the Canadian Advisory Council on the
Status of Women when its then President, Doris Anderson, was leading
Canadian women in the historic campaign for what ultimately became the
equality guarantee in Section 15 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
She is also a former Canadian Ambassador for Disarmament to the UN and
member of the University of Ottawa Common Law Honour Society. Since June of
2014 she has been the President of the Rideau Institute, an independent
research and advocacy think tank on foreign, defence and national security
policy, with a mission to help restore Canada to its former peacekeeping,
diplomatic peacemaking and peacebuilding role in the world, through
creative and innovative multilateralism, strengthening the UN and building
international law.
