One week to go in the Darrell Posey Fellowship Program’s Indiegogo Campaign!

Dear Members and Friends of the ISE,

The remarkable people who receive these Fellowships - whether community leaders, activist scholars, and/or lifelong advocates of indigenous, human or environmental rights – are found through the efforts of our worldwide ISE network.

Gabrielle, a Student Fellow (PhD) of 2012-2013, is one such remarkable person. Last week, on June 8th, 2017, she became the 3rd Aboriginal student to graduate with a Ph.D. from her university. Of Métis background, Gabrielle used her Student Fellowship to conduct in-depth, community-led research on Métis identity in British Columbia, Canada.

Let us support our own ISE champions, like Gabrielle, in their efforts to protect the planet’s biological and cultural diversity!

You can help us with your contribution OR with 10 minutes of your time for promoting this campaign; see below for details.

Below are excerpts from Gabrielle’s message to us all following her graduation ceremony:

“The Darrell Posey Fellowship… was integral to ensuring that my research was conducted in a way that was ethical.”

“This began with the ISE supporting my travel and participation in the 2012 Emerging Ethnobiologist Pre-Congress workshop and the ISE Congress in France. The experience of learning from Indigenous peoples from throughout the world as well, as well as from researchers who worked directly with Indigenous communities provided the basis for my understanding of what it means to engage in respectful research with Indigenous peoples.”

“The Darrell Posey Fellowship went directly towards supporting a gathering of Métis elders and community members to initiate the process of community-based research. Here, I sought input on what it was that the community wanted me to research and more importantly, how it could be completed in a way that was respectful of the knowledge shared by the participants themselves and the broader Métis community.”

“This initial gathering was the foundation of what would become an in-depth community-led study of Métis Identity in British Columbia. Conducting this kind of community-based research is often difficult to accomplish, as it requires considerable time and additional resources to support the travel, accommodation, and appropriate recognition of community members.”

“It took nearly five years to get here, but I am proud of what we could accomplish with the support of the Darrell Posey Fellowship.”
