The purpose of the dam is to power the probably ephemeral gas liquefaction plants. It is not needed for ordinary people or economic activity, and it will flood agricultural lands in the north that are uniquely suitable for vegetable growing. It will also flood much of the territories of at least two native bands, as well as a lot of valuable wildlife habitat.
