• New UNESCO publication on role of botanists for sustainable economies

    The 286 page ‘Botanists of the twenty-first century: roles, challenges and opportunities’, based on the proceedings of a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) international conference by the same title, which took place in Paris in September 2014, was published online in February 2016 by UNESCO and is freely available to download at: http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0024/002437/243791m.pdf    

    The book provides presentations relevant to the sustainable production and trade of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) including:
    • “Progressing plant conservation through policy, practice and participation” keynote presented by Sara Oldfield, Botanic Gardens Conservation International;
    • “Threats to rainforests in the Peruvian Amazon” keynote presented by Julio Ruiz Murrieta;
    • “Plant conservation for the benefit of local communities: The MGU – Useful Plants Project” presented by Tiziana Ulian, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK;
    • “La connaissance des espèces : une quête du Graal pour la gestion durable des forêts tropicales” presented by Charles Doumenge, Centre de Coopération Internationale en recherché Agronomique pour le Développement (CIRAD), Montpellier, France.
