This is a newly created role within a fast-growing organization in the medical cannabis industry. The incumbent will possess a strong scientific background paired with a proven track record in leading a team of scientific professionals.
As the Director of Research & Development (R&D), you will be responsible for managing the R&D team, managing the operations of the R&D laboratory facility, and implementing the companies R&D strategic plan. The successful candidate will be a results-driven, team player, capable of working in advanced closed-environment plant production systems, have a thorough understanding of research operations and standard operating procedures, and deep experience with laboratory diagnostic approaches and regulatory compliance. The incumbent will possess strong leadership skills and a well-develop business acumen.
Job Responsibilities
- Leading the organization’s R&D strategy; providing regular updates to the senior leadership team
- Lead the R&D department, including: people management, performance management, budgeting, reporting, business planning, etc.
- Responsibilities include, but are not limited to project planning, scheduling, allocation of personnel and resources, budgeting, overall supervision of project personnel and invoicing
- Provides technical expertise on a variety of projects under the supervision of the R&D team
- Interprets data or reviews data interpretation by others
- Writes or reviews reports or portions of reports
- Other duties as required
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Qualifications and Skills
- Master’s degree in plant biology or a related field
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a leadership role
- Strong business acumen, including experience with budgeting, people management, team development and planning
- An asset: Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories (CCIL) certification
- Outstanding reliability and organizational abilities
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy
- Reliable, approachable, and respectful demeanor
- Familiarity with federal and provincial legislation and regulations
- A working knowledge of commercial plant breeding and propagation systems is an asset
- A background in closed-environment plant production systems is an asset
