Adam Sobel (Columbia University) "Hurricane Sandy and Climate Change: Predictions and Responses"
March 16, 2015 @ 630pm at SFU Harbour Centre, Segal Centre, Rooms 1400-1410.
Forecasts of Superstorm Sandy’s landfall on the northeastern US coast in
the days before enabled many life-saving preparations. How can
science-based warnings about disasters to come in the less immediate
future, like the coastal flooding predicted by human-induced climate
change spur investment in infrastructure before disaster strikes?
Adam Sobel is Professor of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics and
of Earth and Environmental Science at Columbia University. His talk will
draw on his recent book, _Storm Surge: Hurricane Sandy, Our Changing
Climate and Extreme Weather of the Past and Future_, which explains the
science of climate change and raises questions of how cities like New
York ought to prepare for the extreme weather that current scientific
models predict.
