New York Times Runs Tribute to Master Teamaker Steve Smith

Last week, the American Botanical Council issued an ABC Member Advisory to share the sad news that veteran tea expert Steven Smith, co-founder of Tazo and Stash teas, and founder of Steven Smith Teamaker, passed away last Monday, March 23.

Media outlets around the country have already paid tribute to his life, including an obituary in The Oregonian from his native Portland, Oregon, and, most recently, last Thursday, an extended obituary in The New York Times. Both articles honor his creativity, philanthropy, and the prominent role he played in introducing high-quality teas to the American market. His legacy of uncompromising excellence and his dedication to the communities that grew his teas touched lives around the world and forever altered the tea market in the US.

Steven Smith’s tribute in The New York Times can be found here: “Steven Smith, a ‘Marco Polo’ of American Tea, Dies at 65.”
