Sierra Club post UBC Political Science survey

Dear Cheryl,

The Political Science department at UBC has seen how much attention Sierra Club e-mails gather, and they’ve requested our help.

The folks at UBC have created an online ‘election’ survey that they’d like you to participate in. It is being used for academic research to get a clearer picture of how voters think about their choices in provincial elections. They are studying different groups of citizens that are concerned about certain issues, and right now they are looking for individuals who feel strongly about environmental issues to do the study, so they asked if Sierra Club members would help out.

The survey asks a few questions about the environment and carbon taxes, and is being used to study how voters respond to issues discussed by parties and the media in election campaigns. The study involves answering some questions, then reading a few newspaper articles as if you were experiencing a provincial election campaign, and then answering some questions about that campaign.

If 500 of our members participate, that will be enough for a valid data set. As a result, we will gain access to the results, and we’ll use them to improve our environmental campaigns. As an added bonus for reaching the 500 mark, we will receive a token of appreciation grant from UBC, so please participate!

You can do the study whenever you like before July 15, but if you can do it right away we’ll see how fast we can reach the 500 mark.

It’s completely anonymous and has been approved by the UBC Human Subjects Research Ethics Board. It is being conducted with a few hundred UBC students at the moment and it tends to take them between 20 and 30 minutes.
