Chapter 73 – Herbs and Dementia: A Focus on Chinese and Other Traditional Herbs

Chapter 73 – Herbs and Dementia: A Focus on Chinese and Other Traditional Herbs

Eating is a lifelong necessity and, as many people experience, eating behaviors can also lead to health problems. Attention to diet and nutrition should enable development of dietary and therapeutic measures that can arrest, resist, delay, or reverse disease risk factors, including aging, by regenerating, rejuvenating, or revitalizing the metabolic functional dynamics of the bodily organs. Within this context, this review examines the appealing potential for chemoprevention and the function and contribution of the most frequently used dietary herbs. These herbs may serve as long-term dementia prevention treatments that can complement the daily diet to improve quality of life. Expanded coverage of the evidence for the antidementia effects and cognitive improvement provided by huperzine A and Bacopa monnieri is also presented.
