To the Editor:
I looked in vain in the endless columns of coverage devoted to the centennial of the Statue of Liberty for a comment about the most obvious of her messages: Here is a strong and powerful woman proclaiming the strength and freedom of women.
I doubt if she would tolerate any man condescending to her with titles like ''Miss'' or ''Lady.''
What I love about her is that she is not smiling, and she has a clear don't-mess-with-me look on that wonderful face. And if there is any doubt about her strength, there is that powerful arm, not holding a sword but a light.
Men will probably never understand how famished women are for female symbols. We are inundated with male monuments. We claim that woman in the harbor as one of us. GABRIELLE BERNARD Cambridge, Mass., July 4, 1986
