Job description
We are
seeking to develop emerging talent by providing a short-term (6-12
months) postdoc position (0.6 fte). During this time, the postdoc will
dedicate his/her time to developing and writing a Dutch National (NWO),
EU (ERC) or similar grant proposal. We will consider only the most
competitive proposals, which will be evaluated primarily in terms of
innovative potential and academic excellence.
We will consider any project within the humanities (area studies, history, linguistics, art history, literary studies, cultural studies, ancient languages and cultures), archaeology, or cultural anthropology. The proposal must demonstrate an innovative, preferably cross-disciplinary, approach (theoretical, methodological or both) and advance the study of a topic concerning global interactions. Ideally, the proposed research should complement existing research at Leiden. A condition of the postdoc is that if a grant application is successful, the candidate will agree to be based at Leiden (pending agreement with the relevant institute and faculty).
Expected results:
1. Produce a good draft of VENI grant proposal by the end of their tenure (6 month tenure)* and one refereed publication;
2. Produce a good draft of VIDI/ERC starting/consolidator grant proposal by the end of their tenure (12 month tenure)* and one refereed publication.
*the resulting proposal should be ready for submission by the first application deadline following the postdoc end-date.
During your appointment you will be supervised by an LGI coordinator and a professor in your area of expertise.

Requirements
The
candidate must have a PhD degree in a field listed above and show a
strong interest in cross-disciplinary methods and/or collaboration. New
PhDs should have one or two peer-reviewed publications in hand or in
process, and advanced postdocs should have an established publication
record.
Conditions of employment
We offer support at two levels:
1. 6 month postdoc (0.6 fte) - New PhDs (up to 2 years beyond the PhD)
Application target is the NWO VENI research grant (250,000 Euros for up to 4 years);
2. 12 month postdoc (0.6 fte) - Advanced postdocs (up to 7 years beyond the PhD)
Application target is the NWO VIDI or ERC Starting/Consolidator research grant (800,000 – 2.75 million euros for 5 years).
We offer a vibrant international academic environment, a diverse range of expertise from scholars who have been on both sides of the grants process to aid you in your proposal development, and assistance from staff for budget development.
You are appointed for 0.6 fte for a period of 6 months or 12 months, starting on the 1st of January or February 2016. The appointment will be under the terms of the CAO (Collective Labour Agreement) of the Dutch Universities. Salary range from € 2.476,- to € 4.551,- (pay scale 10/11) gross per month based on a full time (1.0 fte) employment, commensurate with qualifications. The
Faculty of Humanities is rich in expertise in fields as philosophy,
religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics and
regional studies covering nearly every region of the world. Our faculty

information, see www.hum.leidenuniv.nl.
The Leiden Institute for History is one of the six research institutes of the Faculty of Humanities. The institute is responsible for the main part of the historical research carried out at Leiden University, see www.hum.leiden.edu/history/
Leiden Global Interactions (LGI) is a university research profile that involves the Faculties of the Humanities, Archaeology and Social Sciences at Leiden University. A central idea that unites the diverse research within this initiative is a shift away from a classical Weberian approach that views historical development (and modernization) as emanating from Europe and ‘the West’ to a truly global approach allowing for multiple perspectives in a multipolar world. This de-centering approach remains central to our mission in promoting innovative research on past, present, and emergent global forms and interconnections.
