Sierra Club Post - Proposed change for charity law

Changing charity law welcomed Ottawa - Sierra Club Canada Foundation (SCCF) welcomes the commitment of the Liberal Party to join with the New Democratic Party and the Green Party to bring an end government bullying of charities. For three years environmental charities have been the target of an anti-democratic government disinformation campaign and the improper use of Canada Revenue Agency. “The CRA is for collecting taxes not intimidating charities unpopular with the government of the day,” said John Bennett, Sierra Club Canada Foundation. SCCF has been told by the CRA that it will be more than a year before the results of an audit conducted in May be of this year will be known. Several other environmental charities are in the same position.   “Charity law is out of date and no longer reflects the important role charities play in public policy especially with regard to the environment,” said Mr. Bennett. “Our contributors and the public expect us to speak out loudly. It is great to see that some political parties are prepared to change the law to reflect the reality of modern Canada,” he continued. La FSCC a été enquêtée par l'ARC en mai dernier et a appris que les résultats de l'enquete ne seront disponible que l'année suivante. Plusieurs autres organismes de bienfaisance environnementaux sont dans la même position. «Le droit des organismes de bienfaisance est obsolète et ne reflète l’importance que ces organismes jouent dans la politique publique en particulier à l'égard de l'environnement», a déclaré M. Bennett. «Nos collaborateurs et le public s’attendent de nous une voix haute et forte. Il est formidable de voir que certains de nos partis politiques sont prêts à changer la loi pour refléter la réalité du Canada moderne », a-t-il poursuivi.
