Applications are currently being sought for participants interested in taking part in a week of reading and workshopping in the medieval Italian hill town of Monte Castello di Vibio. Using facilities made available by the International Center for the Arts, the small group of scholars will spend mornings reading and discussing important contemporary papers in environmental philosophy and evenings workshopping papers-in-progress written by the group’s members. The theme for 2016 is “The Post-Wild.”
Two field trips will anchor the week. One will involve a glimpse of the local agricultural economy by following truffle hunting dogs in the Monte Castello area. The other will be to Norcia in the Apennine region to discuss some possibilities for re-wilding.
The idea is to provide a relaxing and unique environment for some focused work on important emerging areas of environmental philosophy. Monte Castello will provide a serene and picturesque setting for our work. Its proximity to Todi, Assisi, Florence, and Perugia provides opportunities for numerous side-trips during (or after) the workshop. The small group is designed to provide a supportive and high quality intellectual environment for exploring new areas of environmental philosophy and for peer evaluation of each other’s work and ideas. Reading materials can be suggested by participants prior to arrival in Italy.
The week’s fee of 1250 EUR will include food and lodging in Monte Castello as well as transportation for the field trips. (Meals out during the field trips as well as travel expenses to and from the Center for the Arts in Monte Castello are the responsibility of participants).
To apply, please send a two page vita, a brief (300 word) abstract of the paper you plan to workshop, and a suggestion for an additional article or book chapter for the week’s reading. Email attachments toChristopher Preston. Closing date for applications is April 20th, 2016.
