Chapter 10 – Nutraceuticals, Dietary Supplements, and Functional Foods as Alternatives for the Relief of Neuropathic Pain
Abstract
In
clinical practice, it has been extensively described that chronic
neuropathic pain is difficult to treat because most of the classical
therapies for the treatment of pain usually do not work in this type of
pathology. The variety of therapeutic options for the treatment of
neuropathic pain has increased in recent years, although most of the
available treatments do not produce satisfactory results. The
advancement of technology, concern for financial achievement, and the
tiresome routine of working hours has changed the customs of the
populace. In the midst of this new way of life, diseases, stress, and
metabolic and psychological disturbances have arisen. Fortunately,
research continues, including the search for natural alternatives that
may somehow enhance quality of life and reduce damage to health. In this
chapter, we have gathered studies demonstrating the effects of
nutraceuticals, food supplements, and medicinal plants on neuropathic
pain.
