New York Daily News Runs Opinion Piece on NY AG’s “Junk Science”; ABC Chief Science Officer Quoted
On Wednesday, April 15, New York Daily News ran an opinion piece criticizing the science behind New York Attorney General (NY AG) Eric Scneiderman’s herbal supplement investigation, which began in early February. The article mentions a number of limitations of using DNA barcoding technology on certain herbal products (i.e., extracts) from the white paper commissioned by four trade associations in March, and highlights the fact that Mr. Schneiderman has thus far declined to release the results of his DNA barcoding study of store-brand herbal supplements. Such actions, the article continues, are inappropriate.http://www.crnusa.org/NYAG/The-Capabilities-and-Limitations-of-DNA-Testing-FINAL-3-10-2015.pdf

As American Botanical Council Chief Science Officer Stefan Gafner, PhD, is quoted as saying in the article, “If I would have tried to publish the data that the New York attorney general based his legal action upon, I would think my scientific reputation would be ruined.”
