Abstract
This
article explores contemporary scripts of masculinity. Scripting theory
allows for behaviors to be examined in regard to individual actors,
interactions between individuals, and also how these are influenced by
culture more broadly. Each of these levels of scripting is discussed
independently as it relates to the construction of masculine scripts.
Although these scripts guide individuals in their social interactions,
it is necessary to understand how multiple scripts emerge. Here, the
ways in which masculine scripts are constrained by social structures to
produce particular masculinities are examined in regard to age, sexual
orientation, class, and race.
