[Komplementärmedizin und assistierte Reproduktion]
Abstract
Infertility is a very old human problem that has always been addressed using all available strategies. Up to 66% of infertile patients use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) methods because modern methods are not necessarily successful. The importance of CAM methods is therefore no doubt underestimated. Useful aspects of CAM include psychological support and dietary counseling. Interesting phytotherapeutic measures such as Cimicifuga and Vitex agnus castus merit closer investigation. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) methods (acupuncture, moxibustion, TCM phytotherapy) have not shown convincing results or may not be considered pharmaceutically safe because of toxic heavy metals and undeclared drugs. Due to the prevalence of CAM methods and possible improvements they may lead to in reproductive medicine, further intensive research in this area is required. © 2009 Springer Medizin Verlag.
