Abstract
Despite
the availability of a wide range of modern medicines, wound healing
remains a challenging field of research, especially in such diseases as
diabetes and burn conditions. Plants are the oldest known medicines for
wound care and management and are still promising candidates for novel
drugs in this respect. The usefulness of several plants in wound healing
has been described in various systems of traditional medicine, such as
Ayurveda and Chinese traditional medicine. It has been determined that
the wound healing potential of medicinal plants and their products is
often linked with angiogenesis-promoting potential. Recently, several
plants have been studied to determine their impact on proangiogenesis,
with special attention being given to the influence on expression of
vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the VEGF receptor
(VEGFR2). It has also been observed that certain plants promote
angiogenesis through the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases
pathway, as well.
