Alison’s paper, “Facts and Fancies of Medical Life”, discussed medical realism and popular genres in Margaret Todd’s Mona Maclean, Medical Student and Arthur Conan Doyle’s Round the Red Lamp and The Stark Munro Letters.’ The paper also looked at how popular fiction by medical writers was received in the professional press, examining what the journals’ aesthetic values and literary tastes can tell us about professional anxieties at the fin de siècle.
